JOBS & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
As a small business owner, I have an appreciation for the challenges and rewards of starting and running a successful business, meeting payrolls, struggling with employee health care costs, and trying to remain competitive and profitable in a slowing economy. I believe in the importance of small businesses and entrepreneurship as cornerstones of a growing and vibrant economy, and critically important for innovation and job creation. I will work hard in the Georgia House to encourage and support small business development through tax incentives to new companies, research and development funding for emerging industries in energy and technology, public-private partnerships and greater involvement of our universities in research and development. These are just a few areas where prudent investments can yield significant returns.
EDUCATION
I believe in the value of public education, but we must do more to prepare our children to be tomorrow’s leaders in an ever-changing world, and deliver on the promise of access to a quality education.
The theme of my education policy is: “Ready for School – Ready for Life”. The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable:
- The first few years of a child’s life are critical to their development and future success, and
- Nothing is more important in determining the quality of our children’s education, than the quality of our teachers.
First, we must ensure our children enter school ready to learn by expanding our Pre-K to be universal and of the highest quality. We must also ensure our children have access to affordable, quality health care.
Second, our children must graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills to be successful in life. To this end, we must restore full funding to education, provide stronger incentives to attract and retain effective teachers and give them the tools to be successful, develop curriculum that is academically rigorous and relevant to the “real world” and we must implement programs with a proven track record of success. Although we should not be afraid to innovate, there is considerable research on what works in public education. In any case, public funds should only be spent on public schools.
